Limited hunting pressure the past several years coupled with an expert whitetail habitat and management program ensures deer hunters at Ocmulgee Banks will have quality hunting experiences for years to come.
White-tailed Deer Management at Ocmulgee Banks
The Ocmulgee Banks property currently supports a healthy population of whitetails. This is evident from the sign, the footage capture by our four motion-activated video cameras, and observations of the current owners! In fact, nine quality bucks were harvested during the 2006-07 season. The youngest was 2 ½ years old, and the harvest included 3 bucks 5 years old or older!! The video cameras and hunters both indicated that new bucks were entering the property throughout the season. Certainly the best habitat and food sources in the neighborhood are at Ocmulgee Banks! When the yearling bucks disperse or adult bucks expand their range during the rut from adjoining properties and enter Ocmulgee Banks they find the best habitat in the neighborhood! Nowhere else that we are aware of within miles leaves 100's of acres of soybeans and corn unharvested for the critters to consume. No where else is habitat managed strictly for cover and sanctuaries. The deer simply realize they have found the upscale neighborhood! With only nine bucks harvested and a huge fawn crop, our adult sex ratio will remain balanced during the 2007-08 season and beyond. It was not necessary to harvest does during the 2006-07 season given the abundance of food and quality habitat available at Ocmulgee Banks. Clearly the table is set for continued production and observation of quality mature bucks, does, and fawns at Ocmulgee Banks! In addition, we will allow the herd density to increase given the excess of quality food and habitat available. Clearly, the deer herd at Ocmulgee Banks will continue to increase in both quality and quantity -- an extremely rare combination.
For the 2007-08 season, once again the buck harvests will be limited to only older-age males (those 2½ years old and older). These mature bucks are easy to identify as evidenced by a 100% success rate for aging the harvested bucks during the previous season by the Ocmulgee Banks owners! Our wildlife biologist, Dr. Grant Woods, has determined that since there is such an abundant supply of food available, there will not be any does harvested in the 2007-08 season.
